Black Family 5K 2025 | Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES THE BLACK FAMILY 5K (BF5K) WORK?

It’s simple! You and your family — whether that’s your relatives, your friends, or your chosen family — take a walk together during Thanksgiving weekend. You can amp up your walk and make it hype by ordering the official Black Family 5K T-shirts and swag, but it’s not required.

HOW CAN I REGISTER MY FAMILY FOR THE BLACK FAMILY 5K?

Registration is not required this year, but we encourage families and chosen families to sign up to stay connected.

Visit BlackFamily5K.com to register your family and download your official Black Family 5K Toolkit; it’s your guide for planning the perfect walk.

Once registered, you’ll receive text reminders and updates leading up to Thanksgiving weekend — and we’ll check in to celebrate when your family or friend crew completes your 5K.

WHEN DOES THE BLACK FAMILY 5K HAPPEN?

Thanksgiving weekend — November 27–30, 2025.

Most families walk right after the meal on Thursday, while others prefer Friday as a fun alternative to Black Friday shopping. Select the day that works best for your crew, and check in throughout the weekend using #GirlTREK.

Tip: If you’re traveling for the holiday, host multiple walks — one at your cousin’s house on Thursday and another around your neighborhood on Sunday. It’s the perfect way to introduce the power of walking to your family or chosen family and start a new tradition.

WHERE DOES THE BLACK FAMILY 5K HAPPEN?

Wherever you are, these are neighborhood walks — some folks circle the block, others head to a nearby park. There’s no central gathering. You choose the place and lead your people.

Tip: Scout the route beforehand to ensure it’s stroller- and senior-friendly, so everyone — from babies to great-grandparents — can join safely.

Tip: If your family is super-sized, check with your city to see if a permit is needed.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE BLACK FAMILY 5K?

Anyone. This is a family affair — including chosen families, friends, and loved ones who feel like home. Whether you walk with your relatives, church group, coworkers, or sisters-in-spirit, everyone is welcome.

Tip: Keep it inclusive and comfortable for all fitness levels — no sister, brother, Madea, or Uncle Joe left behind.

Tip: Bring water and keep everyone hydrated.

DOES IT COST ANYTHING?

No. All you have to do is lace up, walk, and enjoy. You can purchase official shirts and swag, but this is about spirit over stuff — joy, health, and connection.

BUT I WANT GEAR! WHERE DO I GET IT?

Order the official 2025 Black Family 5K Long-Sleeve Tee here:

https://shop.girltrek.org/products/2025-black-family-5k-unisex-long-sleeve-tee

Order by November 15 to receive it in time for Thanksgiving Day.

Tip: If you can’t purchase BF5K gear, wear your family reunion shirts or matching colors. The goal is to represent your tribe — born or chosen — and make joyful memories together.

HOW DO I GET OTHERS INVOLVED?

Invite everyone you know to host a Black Family 5K of their own — whether it’s with your extended family, your church group, your sorority sisters, or your chosen family. Use #GirlTREK to share your photos and let others know you’re in. Together, we’ll make history with families walking nationwide.

WHERE CAN I GET ALL THIS INFO IN ONE PLACE?

Head to BlackFamily5K.com for registration, T-shirt orders, and the downloadable Black Family 5K Toolkit with everything you need to plan your walk.

WAYS TO MAKE YOUR BLACK FAMILY 5K MEMORABLE

  • Capture lots of photos: grandparents and grandchildren, siblings, cousins, aunties, and uncles — and your chosen family too. Share using #GirlTREK.
  • Have a fun race: winner gets an extra slice of pie or a family bragging-rights trophy.
  • Honor your elders and the next generation: crown the first elder to finish; celebrate the youngest walker, too.
  • Call family afar: Use FaceTime to connect with loved ones who can’t be there, so everyone feels included.
  • Walk in remembrance: begin your walk with a prayer or dedication to those who paved the way.
  • Make a playlist: curate your own “Family 5K” soundtrack — maybe even a Soul Train line moment.
  • Show off your style: wear colorful kicks, headwraps, or bold accessories — reward the best style with a sash or belt.
  • Share stories: walk through your old neighborhood and reminisce — teach the next generation about your family and community history.
  • Celebrate everyone: cheer each finisher, big or small. The Black Family 5K isn’t just a walk — it’s a lifestyle launch.

Bonus: Keep the tradition alive year-round by walking together often — with both your family and your chosen family.
