National Resource Toolkit: Counseling and Support Resources for a Black Woman Grieving the Loss of an Adult Child to Violence

Grieving the loss of a child to violence is an unimaginable pain, one that touches every part of a mother’s heart and spirit. This resource was created with deep love and care for Black women who are navigating that journey. Within it, you’ll find trusted counseling services, peer-support groups, and culturally rooted spaces designed to hold you in compassion, understanding, and strength. You are not alone. There is a community of sisters, mothers, and healers ready to walk beside you, honor your story, and help you find moments of peace, restoration, and hope along the way.


1. National Center for Victims of Crime - Homicide & Grief: Helps survivors of homicide with grief support, legal guidance, and connections to support groups. Call or Text 1-844-443-5732


2. The Compassionate Friends: Peer-support group for parents who have lost a child (any age, any cause). Offers local chapters, online groups, and resources. 


3. Child Bereavement Organization: Free weekly online grief support groups for people who have lost a child, due to homicide.


4. Dougy Center: Provides grief support resources, peer groups, and self-care tools for families after loss.


5. LOVS (Loved Ones Victim Services): Offers counseling, group grief therapy, art therapy, and events for families who’ve lost loved ones to violence.


6. Journey 4Ward: Free trauma counseling, EMDR therapy, and peer support groups for mothers who have lost a child to violence.


7. Voices of Black Mothers United (Woodson Center): Provides community, advocacy, and healing for Black mothers who have lost children to violence.
